次に普段の授業の様子についてオコリ先生、アトキン先生にお話を伺いました。子どもたちが英語を学ぶうえでどのようなアプローチを工夫しているのでしょうか。オコリ先生のお話しによると、授業でさまざまなトピックスを取り上げる際、子どもたちがどんなことについて興味や関心があるのかそれを知ることから始めるそうです。例えば4年生で宇宙について取り上げるとき、子どもたちは宇宙についてどんなことを知っているのか、どんなことについて知りたいかなどリストにしてから特定のトピックスについて学んでいくそうです。
オコリ先生：
We want to know what the students already know about the planets, what the topic they want to study, and also what they want to know. I think that can be a way for the students to create their own lessons.
新先生：
先ほどもお話ししたように「この星について調べてね」じゃなくて、「宇宙にはこういう星があるんだけど、どういうことについて知りたい？」って投げかけることによって、子どもたちが主体的に学べるよう働きかけてくださっているんです。
授業で取り扱うトピックスはユニークでan animal（1年生）やit’s me（2年生）、family and me（3年生）など学年ごとのカリキュラムに合わせて内容が工夫されています。また4年生になるとspace, insects, ocean creatures, environmentなど英語圏で暮らす同学年の子どもたちが触れているであろうトピックスについても取り上げています。ちなみに5年生はendangered animals（絶滅の危機に瀕した動物）について、6年生になるとethicsやAlice in Wonderlandに出てくるジャバウォックの有名な詩なども取り上げているそうです。
アトキン先生の授業もオコリ先生と同じように、扱うトピックスについては子どもたちがみずから決めているそうです。子どもたちを主体とした学びがここにはあります。
アトキン先生：
The 5th grade, they study about endangered animals and write an essay about the animals. Where they live, what they eat, how they reproduce... They will write an essay at the end.
This is a group project. All of them have to write one body for the essay. Each of the group decide what topic they want to study. And they study whatever topic they want to study. We don't decide for them what topic they want to study. So things like that can be student based.
